DISD Hispanic TAKS Math Scores

Ecoli, I hope you are not teaching your children this racist attitude. This explains why I have Hispanic students in my class who feel they don't have to listen or respect an African-American teacher. I suspect they have parents who possess this very same attitude and think poorly of anyone who is African-American. I suspect this is the motivation behind the Memin Pinquin caricature from Mexico...attitudes like ecoli.
The reality is everyone in this country will have to deal with another race and culture at some point in their life and children need to learn cultural tolerance.

It seems as though Ecoli assumed that the original post was from someone who is African-American. I wonder what ecoli's thoughts would be if he/she had learned that the person who wrote the post was Caucasian, Asian, Middle-Eastern or even African. Students who are African born do better in Math than ANY American student.

As for me, I am an African-American teacher, who happens to be a native New Mexican.(and yes, I speak fluent Spanish)
I have a Master's degree in Cognitive Science.
I am also a PhD student at UNT in the same field. My mother did not give birth to kids with different fathers. My brother and I have the same father AND my parents were married to each other. My brother has a degree in Marketing from OSU.

BOTH of my parents are retired educators - my father a former Science teacher, my mom a retired Principal.
BOTH of my parents have Master's degrees from Columbia University in New York.

I did very well in school. We didn't take any criterion-referenced tests such as TAKS in New Mexico; only norm-referenced tests which pitted us against kids across the nation.
In the 9th grade, I scored a 13.9 in Math comprehension. Imagine that! A 14-year old African-American GIRL, scoring nearly a college sophomore level in Math. My parents did not sit with me or go over my homework. They simply said one thing - C's are not permitted.
I can relate to Michelle Obama when she shared with students at a school, that "she liked getting A's"
I did too. I loved getting A's.

As you suggested to one person, I HAVE visited MANY countries older than the US, specifically, Japan, Italy, England, France, Brazil, etc. therefore, I am well traveled. I love learning about other cultures and have very few prejudices when it comes to other cultures. Stupidity however, can make me angry.

During my senior year of college, we were asked to examine our attitudes toward other cultures because as a educator, you are going to be exposed to children of various races. I truly do not see color when I see the faces of my children. I am AWARE of cultural differences. I have to be so I don't make any cultural faux pas when I interact with my students, but that skill makes me a better teacher, a more sensitive teacher.

I give as many hugs to my Hispanic students as I do my African-American students. There is nothing that makes my day more than a child who walks up to me and says, "Can I have a hug?" and the color difference is not important to them or me.

My only regret is that I have not met and taught YOUR children. I came to teaching and to Dallas to make a difference in the lives of children.
I am saddened that your children may have been brainwashed by your hatred of African-Americans. Hatred is a sickness and I hate that they will have to go through life with your attitude toward African-Americans. You might want to to follow your own advice and get to know some people outside your own culture so that your perspective is widened. You have my prayers.

Math is a universal language. As long as you don't confuse the European decimal point with the US Decimal point you should be ok across cultures. Besides.. foreigners have better math skills than our homegrown crowd. Foreign kids are taught more advanced math skills at an earlier age and the teachers there don't have their hand tied behind their back when it comes to corporal punishment.

Hispanic kids start working at an earlier age and they do jobs that their black and white peers are too proud to do. When you live in the same household with 4 other families and your bed is the bathub... you would consider making it out on your own a little earlier too. All this means is that attendance will be last on their priorities.

It's obvious you need to get out more. Have you ever thought of vacation in another country with a richer and older history than yours? The arrogance of your post is overwhelming.

Let me also mention... when you teach hispanic kids... the majority are grateful for the education... all others seem like spoiled brats in comparison.

The only investigation that need to be done is why the black students on DISD roll sheets seem to never match last names with their mother. It is sickening to think that someone not native to this country can come in and outperform a race that wanted so much for its people, but till this day has not taken advantage of the situation. Thank LBJ and worship him like allah for the war on poverty gave you your last breath from the wrath of ghettos in the mid 60's. Maybe we would rather work and provide then have to attend school with maybe the most ignorant race on earth. Drive around Dallas and observe the amount of middle aged black men standing around with their pants to their ankles not being productive. The envy and ignorance still exists with you people. Genocide may be the next best thing to rid the chip on your shoulder. You all have imposed your problems upon yourselves and it is so deep that you can't recover, so what do you do, try to blame others for your issues.
